It originated as a drawing on Mylar, with the horizontal markings around the words applied with a spray gun. Outlined in Boy Scout Utility Modern, an unembellished typeface of Ruscha’s design, the phrase—like many of the artist’s word combinations of the past half century—is simultaneously straightforward and cryptic. It might be a threat, a moral, or a simple observation.
